CONTEMPORARY NORTH II

FEATURING NEW WORKS BY: SHUVINAI ASHOONA, TIM PITSIULAK, NICOTYE SAMAYUALIE, NINGEOKULUK TEEVEE

NOVEMBER 21 - DECEMBER 5

OPENING RECEPTION: NOVEMBER 21, 1-4 PM

Madrona Gallery is pleased to present the second  Contemporary North group exhibition.  This exhibition will feature new drawings from both established and emerging Inuit artists. Over the last 55 years the art of Cape Dorset Nunavut has become internationally recognized, however the 'Inuit' aesthetic is not static. Contemporary Inuit artists increasingly focus on drawings instead of prints, which have allowed them to continually reevaluate questions about life in the north through a contemporary lens.

Shuvinai Ashoona's often self-reflective drawings encourage the viewer to think about the life of artists in the north.  The new pieces by Tim Pitsiulak present in a large scale the coming together of traditional and modern worlds in Inuit culture.  Emerging artist Nicotye Samayualie uses bright colours to present northern landscapes and inanimate objects in a new light.  Ningeokuluk Teevee's expressive drawings focus on the people and animals of the north.
